SHINE Information

Our Story

“A contributing member of society,” is a phrase that parents consider when contemplating the future of their children with special needs. A handful of those parents asked, “What does that mean? What is out there for my adult son or daughter?” Looking around the Joplin area, they found only a few programs, little to no job opportunities, and long waiting lists for any vocational venues tailored for adults with special needs. So these parents, along with leaders of the disabilities’ ministry of College Heights Christian Church, decided to start their own faith-based day program, SHINE.

SHINE stands for Serving Him IN Everything. The goal is to help adults with disabilities find religious, educational, and physical enrichment, along with vocational opportunities, social interaction, and a place to serve the community. “Something meaningful to do with their lives,” one parent describes it.

SHINE was launched in July of 2021 as a small pilot program. Starting out at one day a week, SHINE began producing snacks and greeting cards. A day consists of worship and a devotional, physical activity, production of merchandise and/or service projects. SHINE has already grown with new members, new volunteers, and new staff! The plan is to continue to grow, expand . . . . . and continue to SHINE!

How to Volunteer

Join our volunteer network in few steps

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with our Members at SHINE!

SHINE (Serving Him IN Everything) was formed in the fall of 2021 with the mission of providing opportunities for people with disabilities to work, live, and serve as members of the kingdom of God. Our programming focuses on 5 pillars to help Members achieve these goals: meaningful work, faith, service to others, physical activity, and personal development.

Because we work with a vulnerable population, we have a big responsibility at SHINE to make sure all who volunteer in our program are the right fit. With that in mind, here are the steps to volunteering with our Members. No experience is needed, only a heart and passion to serve!

Testimonials

“At SHINE, our daughter feels like she is at home—in her element. As for us, we are thrilled that she is happy to be out and active with things that give her life purpose.”

Darla Easter

"SHINE is a program that gives my girl her own community and a sense of belonging. She is finding that she has purpose in her life and that she can do hard things and be proud of her work when she's done. She lights up on Thursday evenings when she tells me about her day. She remembers the Bible lesson she learned that day and that used to be hard for her, remembering details like that. We have been on multiple waiting lists for years for her to be involved in any type of program and I see now that God had us waiting for SHINE to be developed. A faith based program, right here in our town, God is so good and his timing is perfect."

Bethanie Southern

"I like watching everyone make stuff and then seeing how proud everyone is of their work."

Kandice Pendley

"SHINE has changed me and my relationship with God. It has opened my eyes to the idea that everyone has a purpose."

Terrie Dresh

"SHINE is a blessing to me. When I come over to help with Physical Fitness time, I hear the end of worship time, I hear everyone praising the Lord by learning memory verses. I will come in and someone is reciting the verse alone. They also show me the project they are working on. They are so proud. During exercise time I see people growing stronger and having fun as they move. SHINE is a great place to work and honor Jesus."
